Continuing Ed Round Up: Fall 2017

November 9, 2017 By Theresa Bricker

The Art Docents have had a fun filled start to the 2017 school year with range of fun Continuing Education events and activities for members to socialize, create and learn more about art.  We’ve had great turnouts and hope to see more of you in the future.  Remember members, keep checking the website for updated info and sign ups!

SFMOMA: Secret Sketchers
In September, one of our very own Art Docents, Jennifer Kretschmer, showed her iPad drawings at the SFMOMA.  The event entitled “The Secret Sketchers” displayed the work of a group of active sketchers from the Bay Area.  Through 20 seconds of 20 slides, each presenter fostered deeper thoughts and conversations about the opportunities we may miss in such a fast-moving metropolitan area.  Luckily, for those of us who missed the show, she will show us her presentation at the November General Meeting.

The Art Circle
The Art Art Docents are experimenting with a new on-going event this year called “The Art Circle”.  It’s a gathering of Docents focused on discussing art while working on our own personal creative projects within a supportive group setting.  Current projects include watercolor, ink drawing, painting, crocheting & collage.  We hope that more members join us in the future … you don’t have to be an formal artist, you just need to be willing to explore the creativity inside you!

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)
A group of Art Docents enjoyed a curator lead tour of the 37th Connect and Collect Art Auction Exhibition. This annual event featured more than 100 pieces by local, national and international artists.  The Docents were treated to both an in depth examination on the processes and visions of the artists as well as insights of what goes into curating a exhibit of multiple artists.  We ended the excursion with lunch, coffee and discussions at the San Jose SoFa Market.

Film Night:  Loving Vincent
A group of Docents enjoyed an evening out in Palo Alto to view a film about the life of Vincent van Gogh entitled “Loving Vincent”.  In a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist’s final letter and ends up investigating his final days there.  For a view of what n animated “painted movie”  looks like: Loving Vincent Movie Trailer.  For more info on how the film was created: Painting Animation Work Stations.

Santa Cruz Beach Day
A fun day was had by all who attended Michelle Abene’s Beach Day.  After an initial gathering and introductions, the large group headed down the beach for yoga and meditation lead by Roxana Kost.  After a wonderful rejuvenating session, ending with a laughing circle in the surf, the group congregated back at the Beach House.  A mini Soul Collage class was taught by Jessica Richter.  Docents intuitively explored their personalities through the medium of collage and paired off to journal their results.  We all then enjoyed a casual lunch together before carpooling back to Los Gatos.  This is turning into a reoccurring Docent event that is not to be missed.  Be sure to join us next time!

Continuing Education Roundup: Sept-Oct

October 27, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

It’s been an exciting kick-off to the 2016 school year, and the Art Docents have hosted a variety of continuing education events where members learn, collaborate and connect.

Sketchbook Journaling
Our own Julie F. led a sketchbook journaling class in September at the Art Docent office. Junior Art Docents were included in this event, where members worked on their individual sketchbooks and watercolor masterpieces. Everybody enjoyed working together and sharing art experiences with each other.

Beach Day
Beach Day was a big success with 13 people attending (including one trainee). We enjoyed gorgeous weather during yoga and a stroll on Twin Lakes State Beach in Santa Cruz, and the succulent gardens provided an opportunity for conversation and creativity.

San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA)
A group of Art Docents visited the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in downtown San Jose to tour the Connect and Collect Art Auction Exhibition. Connect & Collect is an ICA event that provides an opportunity for art enthusiasts and collectors “to view and purchase artwork by rising stars and celebrated artists whose work reflects the scope of the art world’s vibrant and eclectic styles and interests,” and includes paintings, photography, sculpture and mixed-media art from almost 200 artists.

Whitney Modern Art Gallery
On October 18th we were invited on a private tour of the Whitney Modern Art Gallery in downtown Los Gatos. This new gallery is owned by Suzanne Whitney Smedt and her artist husband, Gordon Smedt, who were also our featured guest speakers at the October general meeting. We were introduced to works by the seven artists represented by the gallery which included paintings, sculpture and photography.

Pumpkin Decorating
We enjoyed a fun evening at the Art Docent office decorating pumpkins on October 20. Attendees, including Art Docents and Junior Art Docents, brought their own pumpkins and embellishments were supplied. It was a great way to get the Halloween season started!

Zoey Frank

May 16, 2016 By Julie Ferrario

The Art Docents of Los Gatos were very fortunate to have artist Zoey Frank joining us at our October general meeting.

Zoey Frank is an exciting and talented emerging artist, whose award-winning work has been displayed across the country and featured in many recent publications.  Ms. Frank shared her paintings and drawings with us, and discussed her approach to expressive portraiture, both as an artist and as an art educator.  It was such a treat for all of us and we want to express our sincere thanks to Zoey Frank. Check out the video that she showed during her presentation.

Zoey Frank studied at Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, and earned an M.F.A. in painting from the Laguna College of Art + Design.  She currently has a studio in San Jose, and teaches painting workshops, including one later this month at the Los Gatos NuMu. You can learn more about this artist and her work at zoeyfrank.com, and find information about her upcoming class at NuMuLosGatos.org.
